Kaitlin Bouleau
Kaitlin Bouleau’s work emerges from a deeply felt engagement with the natural world, where colour and fluidity of form serve as primary means of expression. Through a process of distillation and transformation, she seeks to capture not the outward appearance of a landscape, but its essential presence—its movement, its vitality, its capacity to evoke a profound and often ineffable resonance. Her paintings exist in the space between abstraction and figuration, where form is not rigidly defined but instead shifts and breathes, allowing for a more intuitive and felt experience of place.
Central to Bouleau’s practice is an interrogation of the ways in which landscape has traditionally been framed—as something external, something to be observed, controlled, or utilized. Her work resists this notion, rejecting the idea of nature as a passive backdrop for human activity. Instead, landscape becomes an active force, imbued with agency and expressiveness, capable of shaping as much as it is shaped. Her compositions are not depictions in the conventional sense; they are encounters, spaces where the natural and the spiritual, the material and the symbolic, are inextricably intertwined.
Bouleau’s approach to landscape is deeply personal, yet it gestures toward a broader, more universal experience—one that asks the viewer to consider their own relationship with the world around them. In her work, light and shadow, form and colour, movement and stillness exist in a delicate balance, reflecting the continuous and often unseen exchanges between self and environment. By allowing landscape to emerge as a presence rather than a setting, she challenges the notion of human separateness, offering instead a vision in which nature is not only seen, but felt, inhabited, and ultimately, understood as a force that exists beyond the limits of perception.
